WG 2026-3 Artificial Intelligence in the Electricity distribution networks
CIRED is pleased to announce the launch of a new Working Group,“Artificial Intelligence in Electricity Distribution Networks – Opportunities, Challenges, and Pathways for Digital Transformation”, officially established on 29 September 2026. The Working Group will explore the rapidly growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in supporting the transformation of electricity distribution networks and helping Distribution System Operators (DSOs) address the challenges of an increasingly complex and dynamic energy landscape.
The group will examine how AI can enhance grid planning and operations through applications such as load and distributed generation forecasting, asset management, fault detection, cybersecurity, topology optimisation, flexibility and DER integration, grid resilience, and predictive customer support. It will also address key implementation challenges, including data quality, interoperability, workforce capabilities, governance, transparency, and regulatory considerations.
The Working Group is convened by Diego Alberto, who brings extensive experience in the field of digitalisation and artificial intelligence applied to power systems. His expertise and leadership will support the group in developing a comprehensive assessment of both the opportunities and challenges associated with AI adoption in electricity distribution networks.
The outcome of the Working Group will be a final report providing an overview of current developments, practical use cases, key challenges, and recommendations to support the effective deployment of AI across the electricity distribution sector.
CIRED welcomes the creation of this timely initiative and looks forward to its contribution to advancing knowledge and best practices in the digital transformation of electricity distribution networks.
